Sea Turtle off Australia's Great Barrier Reef

Sea turtles are quiet, elusive creatures, still mysterious to humans after many years of study.  They are threatened worldwide due to hunting, pollution and loss of habitat.

A photograph one of my sons took while scuba diving off of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef provided the subject for this drawing.  It was created with colored pencils.

Here is a photograph of the same turtle shown in the drawing.

Thanks Kathy. I added a photo of my son scuba diving with the turtle. It looks so different from the one you photographed recently.

  3. I like the way you added interesting colors to the turtle shell. Imagine swimming with these creatures…nice touch to add the photo!

Although I’ll often add colors where none exist in the original subject, I think this turtle actually had those colors in its shell. Nature’s palette is pretty amazing. That photo was one of a few I used as a starting point for the drawing.
